Soviet artist Dmitry Mochalsky
Soviet artist Dmitry Mochalsky (1908-1988) – People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1969), People’s Artist of the USSR (1980), laureate of RSFSR State Prize of Repin (1967) – for the painting “New settlers”, “Newlyweds of virgin soil”, “Red Corner,” “External students” from the series “People of virgin lands”. Dmitry Mochalsky was born 2 February 1908 in St. Petersburg. He graduated from the Moscow Art school named in memory of 1905 and the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture of Academy of Arts in Leningrad (1936), among his teachers was Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1973), chairman of the Moscow Union of Artists from 1961 to 1963, taught at Moscow Art institute of Surikov from 1937 and until the end of life (professor since 1950).
Dmitry Mochalsky was the chairman of the Moscow Union of Artists, who headed it during the “Khrushchev thaw” from 1961 to 1963. Events of infamous exhibition in the Arena “30 years of Moscow Artists”, at the opening of which Nikita Khrushchev shouted indignantly: “What kind of spot is this?!” took place with the direct participation of Dmitry Mochalsky – he showed the exhibition to Khrushchev.
The most well-known and essential part of creativity of Dmitry Konstantinovich Mochalsky was his virgin epic. Since 1954, he worked on the series of lyrical genre scenes, dedicated to work and life of Soviet youth in the virgin lands. In particular, “People of virgin lands”, “settlers”, “Tent tractor” (both – 1957), “Red Corner” (1964), “On Ishim” (1965), “Morning at the farm. At the office”(1967), “Four generations” (1968), “The field” (1969), “The rehearsal at the club” (1972), “Trinity” (1975). Paintings by Soviet artist Dmitry Mochalsky are in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum, Russian Museum and other collections of the country.
